Industry leaders convened in London to address the evolving landscape of sustainable supply chains, underscoring ongoing challenges and opportunities. Hosted by RS Group, The Supply Chain of Tomorrow panel on July 9 brought together experts to explore pivotal topics affecting sustainability:
- The rising importance of sustainable and ethical procurement among UK professionals.
- The transformative role of technology in advancing sustainability.
- Current initiatives like sustainable packaging and logistics strategies.
- Collaborative efforts to achieve net-zero emissions goals.
Andrea Barrett, RS Group’s VP of social responsibility and sustainability, emphasized the pivotal role of businesses in responding to climate targets: “Effective responses to climate change require collaboration and a shift towards industrial problem-solving.”
Panelists included Helen Alder from CIPS, Katharina Raimann from Siemens, Carolyn Park from RS Group, and Glynn Hobbs from Schneider Electric. Each shared insights into their companies’ approaches to sustainable supply chain management.
Katharina Raimann highlighted Siemens’ Degree sustainability framework, advocating for sustainability as a strategic investment rather than a mere cost: “Sustainability is integral to future business success in a low-carbon world.”
Discussion also focused on internal best practices, such as reducing plastic use and enhancing recycling efforts within supply chains. Carolyn Park detailed RS Group’s targets and initiatives to minimize packaging waste and engage customers in sustainability efforts.
Glynn Hobbs of Schneider Electric stressed the need for optimizing infrastructure and logistics networks to reduce carbon footprints: “We are committed to achieving carbon neutrality and net zero emissions through strategic infrastructure enhancements.”
The panel underscored the importance of ‘mode shifting’ towards more sustainable transportation options and industry-wide collaboration. They acknowledged that sustainability progress requires long-term commitment and collective effort.
Andrea Barrett summarized, “Sustainability is a marathon, not a sprint. Continued commitment and collaboration are essential to propel us towards a more sustainable future.”
The panel’s insights highlight a growing industry consensus on the imperative for sustainable practices in global supply chains.
