China’s expanding trade activity continues to influence global supply chains, with strong exports of high value products and substantial imports of raw materials, components and intermediate goods supporting production networks worldwide.
China recorded trade surpluses above $100 billion for three consecutive months, driven by higher export values and lower import costs for several commodities. During the first half of 2026, exports of memory chips increased 113.2 percent year on year, while solar cell export value rose 19.6 percent.
At the same time, lower international commodity prices reduced the cost of imported resources such as oil, iron ore, liquefied petroleum gas and chemicals. These inputs contribute to manufacturing and production activities across China’s extensive industrial network.
China’s trade relationship with other economies also demonstrates the importance of interconnected supply chains. Increased exports from Canada’s British Columbia to China, for example, have supported manufacturing activity and employment, illustrating how cross border trade can create opportunities across connected markets.
China’s manufacturing system also relies heavily on international inputs. Raw materials, components and intermediate goods sourced from different countries are processed and incorporated into products serving both domestic and international markets.
The country’s trade structure is increasingly shifting toward higher value products, including renewable energy technologies, electric vehicles, batteries, robotics, artificial intelligence and innovative medicines. This evolution is strengthening China’s position within global production networks while expanding the flow of advanced products across international markets.
China’s exports grew 14 percent year on year during the first seven months of 2026, while imports increased 22 percent, highlighting continued two-way trade and the country’s role as both a major exporter and importer within the global supply chain.
