China has announced sanctions against two U.S. defense companies, citing their alleged support for arms sales to Taiwan.
In a move rarely seen, China has imposed sanctions on General Atomics Aeronautical Systems and General Dynamics Land Systems, accusing them of backing arms sales to Taiwan, which Beijing regards as a renegade province.
The sanctions entail freezing the assets held by these companies within China and barring their management from entering the country.
General Dynamics, which operates multiple Gulfstream and jet aviation services in China, is involved in the production of the Abrams tank purchased by Taiwan. On the other hand, General Atomics manufactures Predator and Reaper drones used by the U.S. military. Details regarding the alleged involvement of General Atomics in supplying arms to Taiwan were not provided by Chinese authorities.
These sanctions come after years of threats from Beijing but are seldom implemented due to various challenges faced by the Chinese economy, including the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
China’s Foreign Ministry denounced the U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, claiming they violate the one-China principle and interfere in its internal affairs, thereby undermining its sovereignty and territorial integrity. According to Beijing, Taiwan remains an integral part of China.
The sanctions were imposed under China’s recently enacted Law of the People’s Republic of China on Countering Foreign Sanctions.
General Dynamics owns fully registered entities in Hong Kong, where Beijing has significantly increased its control, suppressing dissent and tightening its grip over the city.
Despite lacking formal diplomatic ties, the U.S. remains Taiwan’s key diplomatic ally and primary supplier of military equipment. Taiwan has also invested heavily in its defense industry, developing advanced missiles and submarines.
China’s military activities around Taiwan have intensified, with multiple warplanes and navy ships operating in the region. This includes aircraft crossing into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone, a tactic aimed at testing Taiwan’s defenses and intimidating its population.
However, Taiwan’s population overwhelmingly opposes political unification with China, signaling the resilience of its stance amid escalating tensions.
