Vietnam is projected to earn $300 million from exporting frozen durian to China in 2024, following the establishment of a new protocol on plant quarantine requirements, according to Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Plant Protection Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. This projection was announced on September 19.
At an online conference aimed at promoting frozen durian export regulations, Dat noted that the product can be shipped via land, air, or sea. Despite the substantial export potential, exporters will need to address several challenges, including food safety requirements, packaging, origin traceability, and maintaining hygiene standards. Improvements in freezing technology, product quality, and traceability systems are essential, Dat emphasized.
The department will continue to support localities, associations, cultivation areas, packaging facilities, and exporters with technical training and assistance. Close collaboration with the General Administration of Customs of China will be crucial to resolve any issues promptly.
The Departments of Agriculture and Rural Development will focus on increasing awareness of China’s import regulations for frozen durian. Local authorities are expected to enhance inspections to ensure compliance with plant protection and food safety standards in production and packaging.
Exporters, packaging facilities, and producers must carefully review and adhere to China’s regulations, build effective supply chains linking production areas with packaging and export operations, and establish robust traceability systems.
Vietnam’s frozen durian exports to China will include whole durian, mashed durian, and durian flesh. The freezing process requires maintaining a temperature of -35°C or lower for at least one hour until the core temperature reaches -18°C or lower throughout storage and transport.
In 2023, China imported approximately $6.7 billion worth of fresh durian and $1 billion worth of frozen durian from Thailand and Malaysia. With around 150,000 hectares dedicated to durian cultivation, Vietnam has a competitive edge in logistics costs and is expected to exceed $3 billion in durian exports this year.
