Transcom Expands AI Use in Global Logistics

in Logistics & Transportation

The U.S. Transportation Command (Transcom) is increasing its use of artificial intelligence, real-time data systems, and advanced logistics planning tools as global disruptions continue to place pressure on international transportation and supply networks.

According to Transcom commander Air Force Gen. Randall Reed, ongoing operational challenges are driving further integration of digital tools designed to improve visibility, coordination, and decision-making across multiple military and logistics commands.

Reed said the use of information technology systems, including AI-enabled visualization tools, has helped improve awareness of global movements, strengthen coordination between combatant commands, and accelerate planning and decision cycles.

“These systems help us maintain visibility, connect with other commands, and build a common understanding of what is happening,” Reed said during remarks at the Sea-Air-Space symposium. He added that the goal is to support faster, more informed decisions while maintaining stability in operations.

Transcom is responsible for global transportation of personnel, equipment, and supplies for U.S. military forces and defense agencies. Its mission also includes medical evacuation and transport for injured service members, and it operates continuously in both routine and crisis conditions.

Reed emphasized that the command is structured to operate at a constant pace, with the ability to scale up during periods of increased demand. “We plan, organize, train, and equip ourselves so that we respond rather than react,” he said, noting that this approach helps prevent operational strain during sudden changes in demand.

Recent disruptions in global shipping routes, including congestion and security concerns in key maritime corridors, have contributed to adjustments in how Transcom manages transport operations. Reed noted that such disruptions are not uncommon and are addressed through established contingency planning processes.

To maintain operational continuity, Transcom has been rerouting aircraft and cargo through alternative locations, expanding the use of additional airfields and ports, and diversifying fuel storage and supply options. Coordination with regional commands also plays a role in ensuring logistics support remains stable across different theaters of operation.

Reed described the approach as aligning global logistics networks with regional requirements. He said the command works closely with other military branches and regional authorities to connect resources and ensure efficient distribution of transport capacity and supplies.

A key focus area has been improving connectivity across different commands to support shared planning and resource visibility. According to Reed, this includes integrating data systems that allow for real-time tracking of assets and improved coordination across multiple operational environments.

The command is also incorporating unmanned systems into its broader logistics framework. Reed said drones are increasingly relevant in both monitoring and protective roles, particularly for surveillance and infrastructure security. He noted that responsibility for protection measures is coordinated across different branches and agencies depending on operational needs.

Transcom officials said the use of AI and data-driven tools is intended to support more precise planning and better allocation of resources across global operations. These systems are being used to improve situational awareness and enhance coordination among multiple military and logistical stakeholders.

Reed said the overarching objective is to maintain a globally integrated logistics network capable of adapting to changing conditions while continuing to support military readiness requirements. “We use real-time data to make informed, real-time decisions,” he said.

As global supply chain pressures continue, Transcom’s focus remains on strengthening coordination, expanding technological capabilities, and maintaining flexibility across its worldwide logistics operations.
