The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) of Singapore has issued an arrest notice for Ong Beng Seng, a prominent business figure in the city-state, in connection with an ongoing investigation. Ong Beng Seng, a notable property developer and hotelier credited with introducing Formula One racing to Singapore, is currently collaborating with the CPIB in a probe that also involves S Iswaran, Singapore’s Minister for Transport.
Hotel Properties Limited, a company listed in Singapore and associated with Ong, has confirmed that Ong is actively cooperating with the investigation. The company further stated that no formal charges have been filed against Ong as of now. Upon his return to Singapore, Ong, a billionaire, is expected to hand over his passport to the CPIB as part of the investigation process.
This development follows Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s directive earlier in the week, instructing Minister S Iswaran to take a leave of absence until the conclusion of the investigation. While the CPIB has acknowledged Minister Iswaran’s involvement in the investigation, it has not disclosed specific details regarding the nature of the probe.
This investigation represents the first instance since the 1980s where a sitting cabinet minister in Singapore has been involved in an anticorruption inquiry. Singapore is renowned for its strong stance on governance and transparency, having been ranked as the fifth least corrupt nation in Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index for 2022.
Ong Beng Seng, who inherited his wealth from a prosperous Malaysian family, initially amassed his fortune in the shipping insurance sector in the early 1970s. He later diversified his business interests into oil trading, real estate, and the hospitality industry. Ong oversees an extensive portfolio of over thirty hotels and resorts, including prestigious brands such as Four Seasons and Hard Rock Hotels. His pivotal role in introducing Formula One night racing to Singapore in 2008 further elevated his prominence. Forbes listed Ong and his wife Christina among the top 25 wealthiest individuals in Singapore in the previous year.
