Apple has committed to updating its iPhone 12 model in France following concerns raised by French regulators regarding the level of electromagnetic radiation emitted by the devices. This decision was announced after France’s Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barrot and Apple confirmed the upcoming update on Friday.
The development ensued after French authorities, earlier in the week, demanded a suspension of iPhone 12 sales. The 2020 release of the iPhone 12 was found to emit electromagnetic waves exceeding the levels permitted by French regulations.
Digital Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated, “Apple has assured me that it will implement an update for the iPhone 12 in the next few days.” Both Apple and Minister Barrot emphasized that the radiation levels do not pose a risk to public health.
Apple clarified that the concern stemmed from a specific testing protocol unique to France and was not indicative of a broader safety issue. The company affirmed that the iPhone 12 adheres to international standards regarding electromagnetic emissions. To comply with French regulatory procedures, Apple announced, “We will issue a software update for users in France to accommodate the protocol used by French regulators.”
The demand for an update came as the iPhone 12 nears the end of its lifecycle as a leading product for Apple. Following the software update, France’s agency responsible for testing, the ANFR, will promptly review the changes. The Digital Minister will then determine whether the temporary ban on sales should be lifted.
The World Health Organization has previously stated that multiple studies in this area have not established any adverse health effects caused by mobile phone use. However, the specific concerns raised by French authorities have led to this targeted response by Apple for users in France.
