Digital.ai, a prominent provider of software development and delivery solutions, recently released its 17th annual State of Agile report, surveying 788 software development professionals. The report, a longstanding survey in the field, explored Agile’s effectiveness in the software development lifecycle (SDLC). The survey revealed that 71% of respondents incorporate Agile methodologies into their SDLC. While many users recognize improved collaboration and business alignment as key benefits of Agile, the report indicates these advantages have not yet reached their full potential due to challenges like organizational resistance, leadership misalignment, and insufficient business support. Among Agile users, only 11% expressed high satisfaction, while 33% reported moderate satisfaction.
The survey highlighted that smaller organizations report more significant benefits from Agile practices. About 52% of these organizations find Agile to be effective in enhancing productivity and organizational structure, improving software quality, and aligning more closely with business objectives. This contrasts with 43% of larger companies acknowledging similar benefits.
The report also delves into the complexities of scaling Agile amidst AI transformations, developer burnout, hybrid work environments, and shifting business priorities. Agile team leaders are grappling with multiple demands, from showcasing business value and enabling digital transformation to integrating AI and managing distributed teams. However, the report offers a positive outlook for Agile adoption. Users satisfied with Agile reported tangible benefits, with nearly 60% noting improved collaboration and 57% observing better alignment with business needs. A quarter of respondents mentioned an enhancement in software quality.
Derek Holt, CEO of Digital.ai, commented on the findings, “The data confirms that when Agile is effectively implemented, it brings substantial benefits. While AI introduces new challenges, the core objective remains to deliver business value and customer satisfaction. Agile methodologies continue to be crucial in navigating these changes and maximizing software delivery’s impact on business value.”
