UPS is temporarily closing several U.S. facilities as part of its “Network of the Future” upgrade. The closures, impacting over 1,600 employees in states including Maryland, California, Colorado, and Oklahoma, were reported through Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notices. Another facility in Oregon is scheduled for closure in July.
The company plans to reopen these enhanced facilities by 2026 and is working to find alternative positions for affected employees. UPS has stated that the temporary closures will not affect customer service, with measures in place to continue servicing the affected communities.
The “Network of the Future” initiative aims to reduce reliance on manual labor in the package sortation process, allowing UPS to save costs and increase productivity. As part of this overhaul, several buildings have been shut down, and automation upgrades are being implemented in both new and existing facilities.
At the time of the overhaul, UPS had automated about 63% of its volume in processing hubs, a five percentage-point increase from the previous year. The company continues to enhance automation to improve overall efficiency.
