The Netherlands Development Organization SNV hosted the Summer-Autumn Crop Award Ceremony 2024 in Can Tho City, recognizing businesses that have successfully partnered with smallholder rice farmers to enhance profitability while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
These enterprises are part of the “Transforming the Rice Value Chain to Respond to Climate Change and Sustainable Development in the Mekong Delta” project (2023-2027), funded by the Australian Embassy in Vietnam and implemented in collaboration with Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. The project operates across An Giang, Dong Thap, and Kien Giang provinces.
An independent assessment highlighted the economic, social, and environmental benefits of these collaborations. By adopting sustainable rice farming methods, nearly 2,000 households, cooperatives, and enterprises cultivating 6,200 hectares of rice have successfully reduced emissions. The initiative has led to a reduction of over 27,000 tons of CO2 equivalent, while farmers have achieved significant profit margins—64% in Dong Thap, 56% in An Giang, and 54% in Kien Giang.
During the ceremony, eight rice industry enterprises were awarded a total of nearly VND3.2 billion (US$125,098) for their contributions to sustainable farming. The project initially set a target of at least 30% profit margins for small-scale farmers, but results have exceeded expectations, with an average profit of 59.04% during the Summer-Autumn crop of 2024. Additionally, profit-sharing programs from participating enterprises, such as Angimex-Kitoku, have provided further financial benefits to farmers.
SNV Country Director Christie Getman reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to supporting Vietnam’s climate sustainability efforts, particularly in rice production. The initiative aligns with Vietnam’s goal of developing one million hectares of high-quality, low-emission rice production by 2030, promoting farming methods that minimize carbon emissions while improving climate resilience.
The project’s expansion is evident in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, with registered cultivation areas in the three provinces increasing fivefold to approximately 33,576 hectares by mid-March 2025. The growing participation of farmers and enterprises signals the project’s effectiveness and potential for broader implementation.
