The ongoing transport strike organized by the Malayang Alyansa ng Bus Employees at Laborers (Manibela) has seen a decrease in the number of affected routes on its second day. The strike, aimed at protesting alleged corruption within the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Department of Transportation, continues to have no significant impact on public transportation operations.
According to the LTFRB’s statement on Wednesday, the number of affected routes decreased from nine on Monday to two on Tuesday. The operations of public utility vehicles (PUV) and the flow of passengers have not been significantly disrupted by the presence of rallyists.
Nationwide monitoring as of 2 p.m. on Tuesday indicated no transport strikes in any part of the country. On the first day of the strike, both the LTFRB and the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority reported that public transportation in the National Capital Region remained largely unaffected. Free rides were offered by national and local government agencies in the affected routes.
Manibela president Mar Valbuena stated that the strike aims to protest alleged corruption within the LTFRB and the Department of Transportation, citing revelations by former LTFRB executive assistant Jeffrey Tumbado, who later formally recanted his statements.
The strike also addresses concerns about the government’s Public Utility Vehicle (PUV) modernization program, which mandates PUV operators to join or form cooperatives and replace traditional jeepneys and other PUVs with more environmentally friendly alternatives by the end of 2023. The strike, however, has not led to significant disruptions in public transportation services, with the government emphasizing its commitment to address the concerns raised by the transport group.
