The Thai government is encouraging local pet food companies to expand their business in Taiwan and Japan, citing the benefits of close proximity and strong demand in these markets. This renewed focus on Taiwan follows the success of the Ministry of Commerce and over a dozen Thai businesses at the Taipei Pets Show, held from July 5-8, 2024. The Thai delegation secured over $2.5 million in orders from 200 importers, including department stores and large retail chains in Taiwan. Last year, Thailand exported $87.18 million worth of pet food to Taiwan, making it the island’s largest supplier of dog and cat food with a 33.05% share of total imports. The ministry anticipates further growth in the export of Thai pet food, snacks, and lifestyle pet products to Taiwan in the coming months.
Similarly, the Thai Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP) is urging pet food makers to increase exports to the Japanese market, particularly for cat food. This recommendation comes as Japan has seen a shift in market demand, with cats now outnumbering dogs as the most popular household pets. Last year, Japan had around 9 million pet cats compared to 6.8 million pet dogs. Thailand is currently the third-largest exporter of dog and cat food to Japan, with pet food exports to the country valued at $330 million last year.
The Thai government’s call for more pet-related export activities is directed at the country’s 5,009 registered pet businesses, which have a combined capital of nearly 100 billion baht ($27.5 billion). Of these, 2,138 are registered pet food producers, pet care, and service companies.
