In a significant move to promote environmental sustainability within the logistics industry, Singapore has introduced a new sustainability playbook and a dedicated microsite. These resources, unveiled on Wednesday (Feb 21) by the Singapore Logistics Association (SLA) and Enterprise Singapore, are designed to guide logistics companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in developing and implementing green practices.
The sustainability playbook, a component of the broader Enterprise Sustainability Programme, offers a detailed roadmap for logistics companies looking to initiate or enhance their sustainability efforts. It provides an array of resources such as toolkits, training courses, financial support options, and guidelines on sustainability standards that companies can utilize. The playbook focuses on critical sustainability areas including reducing greenhouse gas emissions, energy management, packaging waste management, employee health and safety, engagement, and data security.
Complementing the playbook, the Green Supply Chain Knowledge Hub microsite serves as an informative platform offering practical steps for companies to begin their sustainability journeys. This initiative underscores Singapore’s commitment to integrating sustainable practices within its logistics sector.
The launch event, which saw Minister of State for Trade and Industry Alvin Tan as the guest of honor, highlighted the importance of these initiatives in helping Singapore’s logistics companies align with emerging sustainability trends and develop strategic responses. Tan emphasized the role of these resources in enabling the sector to capitalize on sustainability opportunities.
Highlighting the urgency for logistics companies to adopt green practices, Patrick Wong, Managing Director of GoGoX, mentioned the increasing pressure from large clients for suppliers within the supply chain to embrace sustainability and decarbonization efforts.
SLA Chairman Dave Ng pointed out that while many SMEs recognize the necessity of adopting green practices, there is often a lack of clarity on how to proceed. The new playbook and microsite aim to bridge this knowledge gap by providing tailored, actionable guidance relevant to the logistics industry.
These initiatives are part of the SLA’s Vision 2027, a five-year strategic roadmap launched in October of the previous year, reflecting a comprehensive approach to fostering sustainability within Singapore’s logistics sector.
