Siemens, a prominent German engineering company, has announced its plans to acquire the industrial drive technology (IDT) business segment of ebm-papst through a recent agreement.
The IDT business, currently employing approximately 650 individuals, specializes in the development of intelligent, integrated mechatronic systems within the protective extra-low voltage range, along with innovative motion control systems. These systems find application in various areas, including free-range driverless transport systems.
The acquisition, once finalized, is expected to complement Siemens’ existing Xcelerator portfolio, bolstering its position as a key solutions provider within the realm of flexible production automation.
Cedrik Neike, a member of Siemens’ managing board and CEO of Siemens Digital Industries, expressed optimism about the acquisition, stating, “Ebm-papst’s innovative portfolio of mechatronic drive systems and its highly qualified workforce align well with Siemens. The acquisition presents an opportunity for us to explore new business avenues and customer potential, particularly within the rapidly expanding market for intelligent, battery-powered drive solutions in intralogistics and mobile robot solutions.”
Siemens emphasizes that the IDT products play a crucial role in automating and digitalizing production processes, offering significant potential for enhancing flexibility and productivity. The integration of these products into Siemens’ automation portfolio, coupled with the utilization of its global sales network, is anticipated to facilitate market expansion and drive business growth, especially in the domain of flexible and autonomous factory automation.
The completion of the transaction is slated for mid-2025, subject to requisite foreign trade and merger control approvals.
The IDT business of ebm-papst is currently situated in St Georgen and Lauf an der Pegnitz, Germany, and in Oradea, Romania. The parties involved have opted not to disclose the financial terms of the acquisition.
Dr. Klaus Geißdörfer, CEO of the ebm-papst Group, views the acquisition by Siemens as a strategic milestone. He commented, “Siemens’ global sales network represents a significant growth opportunity for our IDT business, which previously lacked such extensive market access. This integration promises new avenues for innovation and expansion, and the proceeds from the sale will enable us to reinforce our existing divisions and invest in future-focused areas such as digitalization and sustainability across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.”
Siemens’ investment in intelligent, integrated, and network-connected mechatronic systems underscores its commitment to sustainable innovation and its leadership in providing solutions for forward-looking, flexible production automation.
