Japan’s agriculture ministry has reached an agreement with Philippine quarantine authorities to lift the export ban on strawberries, which was previously imposed due to pest contamination concerns. The ban was officially lifted, and exports resumed on Sunday, December 15.
The Japanese Ambassador to Manila, Endo Kazuya, confirmed the resumption of exports through a social media post. The agreement between Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and Philippine authorities was reached following several technical discussions to establish the necessary quarantine requirements.
Under the new agreement, Japanese strawberry exports must adhere to specific quarantine measures, including pest monitoring for the Drosophila suzukii fruit flies, the registration of all production facilities, and pre-export testing for pesticide residues and contaminants.
This development follows recent steps toward strengthening trade ties between Japan and the Philippines. Notably, the Philippines became the first Asian country to export Hass avocados to Japan in November.
