During the recent European Gartner Supply Chain Symposium in Barcelona, Gartner analysts presented insights suggesting that companies should address long-term supply chain constraints by prioritizing short-term risks. This strategy, according to Gartner, proves to be more effective in finding practical solutions to long-term limitations.
Based on a survey of 143 supply chain leaders completed in January 2024, Gartner highlighted the current top constraints threatening business viability. Laura Rainier, Senior Director Analyst at Gartner’s Supply Chain Practice, emphasized that focusing on urgent, tangible issues can drive stakeholder buy-in for longer-term actions.
Gartner recommends three key categories of action for supply chain leaders:
- Motivate Action by De-Prioritizing Long-Term Constraints: Supply chain leaders are advised to focus on addressing short-term risks that stakeholders are most concerned about, as even established long-term strategies may be deprioritized during disruptions.
- Reprioritize Long-Term Constraints to Design Solutions: Effective engagement with internal and external stakeholders can ensure that both present and future constraints are considered in product design, aiming to phase in more sustainable products.
- Leverage the Marketplace to Learn and Innovate: Gartner suggests that leading supply chains innovate by creating learning opportunities and partnering with external entities to overcome technical and regulatory barriers.
Rainier emphasizes the importance of addressing short-term pressures to design solutions that tackle both current and future constraints. Gartner invites reactions and thoughts on this research to foster further discussion.
