The Port of Rotterdam has achieved a significant milestone with the handling of its 500,000th import container under the Secure Chain operational approach. This strategy has been standard practice for all import containers from Latin America since April and from North America since July. It is set to be implemented for container cargo from Africa, the Middle East, India, and Pakistan starting October 1, 2024. The Secure Chain enables the digital transfer of rights to collect containers among the shipping line, shipper, forwarder, and carrier, facilitating secure sharing of essential information. This process utilizes the Port Community System of Portbase, which serves as a neutral logistics platform for Dutch ports. Access to the terminal is restricted to authorized hauliers, barge operators, or rail operators participating in the Secure Chain.
This initiative represents a collaboration between the business community and government entities, including the Port of Rotterdam Authority, the Municipality of Rotterdam, Dutch Customs, and the Seaport Police. The Secure Chain encompasses all major container shipping lines and deep-sea container facilities in Rotterdam. In related news, international battery recycling company SK Tes has announced plans to establish a new facility near the Port of Rotterdam.
