In November 2024, Peru saw a significant increase in garlic exports, with 4,563 tons shipped, generating $13.4 million in revenue. This marked a 22% rise in volume and a 76% increase in value compared to November 2023. The average price of garlic also saw a notable 44% increase, reaching $2.94 per kilogram. While export volumes from January to October 2024 were lower than the previous year, the rise in prices from October contributed to a positive annual balance.
The total garlic export volume for the year reached 11,746 tons, a 42% decline from 2023, but the value increased by 15%, totaling $32.2 million, surpassing the previous year’s revenues. Factors such as a decrease in plantings, delays in crop cycles, and adverse weather conditions negatively impacted the crop’s development. However, higher global prices and production challenges in other countries helped mitigate the volume decline, allowing Peru’s garlic exports to benefit from favorable international prices.
In November, fresh garlic made up 99% of the exports, with the remaining 1% consisting of frozen and paste garlic. Mexico was the largest destination, accounting for 78% of the exports, followed by the United States (17%), Australia (2%), and Ecuador (1%).
