In 2024, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) took action to remove a total of 63,652 fraudulent pieces of content from social media platforms, reflecting a notable increase from the previous year’s figure of 6,297 cases. Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching, pointed out that a significant portion of the removed posts involved AI-generated deepfake content and impersonations of prominent individuals. Among the frequently reported scams were fake investment schemes, which have become more prevalent. Teo kindly encouraged social media platforms to enhance their monitoring systems and to promote greater transparency regarding AI-generated material.
