DoorDash, in collaboration with drone delivery service Wing, has commenced a drone delivery pilot program in Christiansburg, Virginia, enabling selected customers to have Wendy’s menu items delivered via drone. Harrison Shih, Senior Director of DoorDash Labs, expressed enthusiasm about incorporating drone delivery into DoorDash’s operations, emphasizing the company’s dedication to enhancing last-mile delivery logistics. Shih highlighted the anticipated benefits of drone delivery for efficiency, sustainability, and convenience on the DoorDash platform.
The pilot in Christiansburg follows a successful drone delivery initiative by DoorDash and Wing in Queensland, Australia, started in 2022. This Australian program, which now operates in three locations, has delivered products from over 60 merchants, marking significant progress in drone delivery services. Cosimo Leipold, Head of Partnerships at Wing, noted the positive outcomes of the Australian partnership with DoorDash, leading to the expansion of drone delivery services in the United States. Leipold mentioned that Wing has completed over 350,000 deliveries across three countries and aims to provide a fast, economical, and safe service to its partners.
In the U.S., customers within the delivery zone can opt for drone delivery through the DoorDash app, with deliveries typically made in 30 minutes or less. DoorDash anticipates that this venture will offer a rapid and eco-friendly delivery solution for small, local orders and potentially increase overall order volume on its platform.
