The General Administration of Customs (GAC) has announced the resumption of Wendan pomelo imports from Taiwan, effective Monday. The GAC had previously suspended the import of various citrus fruits, including Wendan pomelos, from Taiwan starting August 3, 2022, due to the detection of quarantine pests and other non-compliance issues. Following a thorough review of the corrective measures implemented by Taiwanese fruit producers, the GAC has decided to lift the suspension on Wendan pomelos. Imported pomelos must come from registered orchards and packaging facilities, with the approved list of companies available on the GAC’s website.
Chen Binhua, a spokesman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, emphasized that the initial suspension aimed to protect biological security and consumer health on the mainland. Officials from Taiwan, including those from Hualien county, have advocated for the resumption of imports. They have worked to improve product quality and ensure the safety of Wendan pomelos exported to the mainland. Hualien county has recently provided rectification information to businesses, contributing to the decision to resume imports.
The mainland is open to ongoing discussions with Taiwanese parties regarding agricultural product imports, aiming to benefit both communities on the mainland and in Taiwan.
