Kenya’s avocado exports reached 16,000 metric tons in the first eight months of 2024, up from 14,000 metric tons during the same period in 2023, according to a report from a trade association released Friday.
Hosea Machuki, Chief Executive Officer of the Fresh Produce Exporters Association of Kenya, attributed the increase to more land being dedicated to avocado farming, as farmers aim to benefit from the growing horticultural trade.
“We expect to export 17,000 metric tons by the end of the year,” Machuki shared during a workshop held in Nairobi, Kenya’s capital. The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development noted that Kenyan farmers primarily grow Fuerte, Hass, Pinkerton, and Jumbo avocado varieties.
Machuki also highlighted that the European Union and the United Arab Emirates remain key markets for Kenya’s avocado exports, with China emerging as a new destination.
