Japan remained one of Taiwan’s top three destinations for agricultural exports between 2022 and 2023, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Agriculture.
Key exports to Japan included frozen tuna, feathers and down, moth orchids, and live flowers. Frozen tuna has accounted for approximately half of Taiwan’s agricultural export value to Japan for three consecutive years. Meanwhile, moth orchids and other live flowers contributed between 14% and 18.4%, and feathers and down ranged from 5.6% to 17.7% of the total export value.
In 2023, Taiwan’s agricultural exports to Japan totaled NT$19.44 billion (US$648 million), making up 13.2% of Taiwan’s total agricultural export value and ranking Japan as its third-largest market. The United States was Taiwan’s largest agricultural export destination at NT$26.4 billion, followed by China at NT$22.2 billion.
The ministry noted that agricultural exports to Japan declined from NT$25.5 billion in 2022 (16.3% of Taiwan’s total agricultural export value) to NT$21.3 billion in 2023 (14.7%). The decline was attributed to global inflation, rising interest rates, and the depreciation of the Japanese yen, which impacted consumer purchasing power.
Taiwan also imports a significant amount of agricultural products from Japan. In 2023, agricultural imports from Japan totaled NT$33.9 billion, with chilled beef ranking among the top imports, accounting for 9.4% to 13.1% of Taiwan’s total beef imports over the past three years. Chilled apples were another notable import, making up 23.9% of Taiwan’s apple imports, followed by supplies from the U.S. and New Zealand.
Taiwan continues to maintain a trade deficit in agricultural products with Japan, the U.S., and China, largely due to its reliance on imported raw materials such as corn, soybeans, and wheat. The ministry also noted that rising international agricultural prices have further increased the cost of imports.
