Manila, Philippines – A 27-year-old woman named “Amy” was stopped by immigration officers at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 on January 2. She was trying to skip immigration checks, claiming to be a tourist heading to Bangkok. However, when officials looked into her situation, Amy couldn’t provide the necessary documents and had a fake boarding pass.
Amy revealed that she had been tricked by a scam she found on Facebook that offered immigration escort services. She paid PHP120,000 for help to work abroad illegally. She was told to give her documents and wait for someone to escort her, but right before her flight, the person she was communicating with blocked her messages.
Officials from the Bureau of Immigration think this scam might be linked to a mail-order bride operation. Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado advised the public to be careful of such illegal activities and to always follow the correct immigration rules. Amy was referred to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking for further support.
