Ethiopia has declared an immediate ceasefire in the northern region of Tigray, citing the need to focus on agricultural development and humanitarian aid efforts. The decision comes after months of conflict between federal forces and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced the ceasefire on Thursday, stating that it was necessary to prioritize the nation’s unity and stability. He urged TPLF forces to lay down their arms and engage in dialogue to resolve the crisis peacefully.
The TPLF, which has been engaged in armed resistance against the federal government since November 2020, welcomed the ceasefire announcement but expressed skepticism about the government’s intentions. TPLF spokesperson Getachew Reda stated that the group would assess the situation before deciding on its next steps.
The conflict in Tigray has led to widespread humanitarian suffering, with reports of atrocities committed by both sides. Thousands of people have been killed, and millions have been displaced from their homes, leading to a dire humanitarian crisis in the region.
International observers have welcomed the ceasefire announcement but emphasized the need for all parties to fully commit to ending hostilities and ensuring the delivery of aid to those in need. The United Nations and other humanitarian organizations have called for unrestricted access to Tigray to provide assistance to civilians affected by the conflict.
The ceasefire declaration raises hopes for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Tigray, but the situation remains fluid, with uncertainties about the implementation of the ceasefire and the prospects for lasting peace in the region.
