Hong Kong officials have recently shut down a crime group that was using AI-created fake images to trick people in Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. Operating from Kowloon Bay, the group took advantage of dating apps to create fake profiles of attractive individuals. These fake personas drew in victims, leading them into online romantic relationships before persuading them to invest in fake cryptocurrency schemes. They managed to steal more than HK$34 million before being apprehended. In total, 31 people were arrested, and authorities seized cash, luxury items, and watches. This type of scam, known as “pig butchering,” has contributed to a sharp increase in global fraud, with losses reaching $4.4 billion in 2023 alone.
