Singapore has been named the world’s leading container port in the inaugural Leading Container Ports of the World report by DNV and Menon Economics. The ranking assessed 160 ports across 35 indicators grouped under five pillars: enablers, connectivity and customer value, productivity, sustainability, and overall impact.
The city-state led across all five pillars thanks to its world-class infrastructure, transparent governance, and efficient connectivity. The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has driven key initiatives, including alternative-fuel bunkering, green shipping corridors, and emissions-reduction measures.
The highly automated Tuas Port, central to Singapore’s strategy, began operations in 2022 and is expected to handle over 65 million TEUs annually by the 2040s, making it the world’s largest in throughput capacity.
Shanghai ranked second, benefiting from strong infrastructure, automation investments, and a high Liner Shipping Connectivity Index score. Ningbo-Zhoushan placed third, Busan fourth, and Rotterdam fifth, all noted for efficiency, automation, and sustainability initiatives.
Singapore’s success reflects strategic planning, global connectivity, and continuous investment in innovative maritime solutions, reinforcing its leadership in global trade.
