China’s top trade negotiator Li Chenggang and Vice Premier He Lifeng attended the second day of trade talks with U.S. officials on Sunday in Kuala Lumpur. The meetings, held on the sidelines of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit, involved U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
The discussions aim to address ongoing trade issues between the world’s two largest economies. A U.S. Treasury spokesperson described the first day of talks as “very constructive,” with both sides exploring solutions to ease tensions in trade relations.
A positive outcome from these discussions could facilitate a scheduled meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping next week in South Korea. While the White House has confirmed the meeting, Beijing has not yet issued an official statement.
President Trump arrived in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday as part of a five-day trip in Asia, which includes participation in the ASEAN summit.
