The United States has announced new sanctions targeting Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, along with several other Cuban officials and associates, according to a filing released by the U.S. Treasury Department.
Those included in the sanctions package are Díaz-Canel’s wife and three additional individuals. Among them is Alejandro Castro Espín, son of former Cuban President Raúl Castro and Vilma Espín. Castro Espín previously served as an advisor to Cuba’s Defense and National Security Commission and has held various roles within the Cuban government structure.
The latest measures follow recent actions by the Trump administration aimed at increasing economic and political pressure on Cuba’s leadership. Earlier this year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order expanding sanctions related to the island nation, while senior U.S. officials have continued to advocate for policy changes in Cuba.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio has stated that the administration remains open to engagement with Cuban authorities but has expressed skepticism about the prospects for a diplomatic resolution under the current government. Rubio also recently defended additional sanctions imposed on Cuban entities, including Grupo de Administración Empresarial S.A. (GAESA), a major business conglomerate operated by Cuba’s armed forces.
The U.S. government says the sanctions are intended to increase pressure on Cuban leadership and support broader policy objectives regarding governance and economic reforms. The measures are part of a long-standing sanctions framework that has shaped U.S.-Cuba relations for decades.
Cuban authorities did not immediately respond to requests for comment following the announcement.
The sanctions are not unprecedented in U.S. foreign policy. Washington has previously imposed similar measures against a number of current and former heads of state, government officials, and their relatives in various countries as part of its broader sanctions programs.
Analysts note that the latest actions are likely to remain a focal point in discussions surrounding U.S.-Cuba relations, regional diplomacy, and economic policy in the months ahead.
