Vietnam is experiencing a notable increase in the export of fish bladders, particularly to China, where they are recognized for their nutritional value and cultural significance. Recent data indicates that China has spent approximately 525 billion VND (21 million USD) on this product from Vietnam. The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reports that value-added pangasius products, including dried fish bladders, are gaining traction in global markets. This shift has prompted investments in deep processing to enhance the value of these products, which have become increasingly popular among consumers.
As of August 2024, exports of dried pangasius fish bladders reached 58 million USD, with China remaining the largest market. In the first eight months of this year, Vietnam exported 21 million USD worth of dried pangasius fish bladders to China, representing 36% of the total export value of this product. Twelve Vietnamese enterprises are currently engaged in supplying dried pangasius fish bladders to the Chinese market. Over the past two years, increased purchases from China have compensated for a supply shortage from other regions, particularly Mexico, resulting in higher revenue for many Vietnamese companies.
Fish bladders, including those derived from pangasius, have shifted from being regarded as by-products to valuable commodities, thanks to complex processing techniques that require skilled craftsmanship. It takes 5 to 7 kilograms of fresh fish bladders to produce 1 kilogram of dried product. The price of dried fish bladders in China varies significantly, ranging from 450 to 1,000 USD per kilogram, while prices in Hong Kong can reach up to 7,700 USD per kilogram.
In addition to China, Vietnam exports dried pangasius fish bladders to several other countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, and the United States. VASEP emphasizes that the potential for expanding exports of dried pangasius fish bladders remains strong; however, challenges such as raw material shortages may limit availability.
