Vietnam’s tra fish exports are poised to reach the $2 billion target for 2024, bolstered by advancements across the industry, according to discussions at a workshop held in Cao Lanh city, Dong Thap province, on November 17.
The Directorate of Fisheries under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that the total tra fish farming area is projected at 5,370 hectares, with an estimated harvest of 1.67 million tonnes in 2024. By October 2024, tra fish export revenues had reached $1.56 billion, reflecting an 8.9% year-on-year increase.
To Thi Tuong Lan, Deputy General Secretary of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, highlighted opportunities arising from a limited supply of raw materials, which could push up export prices during the year-end peak season. Other positive trends include reduced inventory levels in major markets, signs of economic recovery in the U.S., and expanding demand in traditional and emerging markets.
Looking ahead, the fisheries sector plans to enhance production efficiency by improving fry quality, boosting disease resistance, and incorporating plant-based and alternative feed ingredients to reduce dependency on fishmeal. Innovations like recirculating aquaculture systems and branding initiatives for Vietnamese tra fish will focus on adopting advanced technologies and meeting food safety, environmental, and Halal standards.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien called for a transition to industrial-scale farming practices that prioritize biosafety, responsible antibiotic use, sustainable production, and market diversification through supply chain integration.
