The Philippines has fallen to fourth place in global banana exports, according to the latest data from the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The country’s export volume declined by 3% in 2024, primarily due to the impact of extreme weather events and the spread of the Banana Fusarium Wilt Tropical Race 4 (TR4) disease. This marks a drop from third place in 2023, with Ecuador, Guatemala, and Colombia now leading the export rankings.
Despite the decline, the Philippines remains the top banana exporter in Asia. However, production challenges persist, particularly in Mindanao, where a significant portion of the country’s banana plantations has been affected by TR4. Geopolitical tensions in the South China Sea also played a role in disrupting exports.
The country’s total banana exports reached 2.278 million tons in 2024, down from 2.35 million tons the previous year. The FAO notes that the global banana trade also saw a slight decline, with major exporters facing similar challenges, including adverse weather and plant diseases.
