While a timeline for the return of Chinese demand remains unclear, Japan’s seafood producers are successfully diversifying their markets and strengthening their global reach. Efforts to reduce reliance on China have led to impressive growth in alternative markets. Scallop exports to the United States surged by 64.1% in the first half of 2024, while exports to Vietnam increased nearly eightfold, reflecting Japan’s proactive approach to expanding sales channels and developing new opportunities.
In 2022, scallops accounted for over 50% of Japan’s seafood exports to China. Although exports to China have temporarily slowed, the industry’s focus on innovation and market expansion is beginning to bear fruit, with encouraging signs of increased demand in other regions. Industry leaders are optimistic that the eventual resumption of Chinese imports will provide an additional boost to Japan’s seafood sector, while the development of new sales avenues ensures that the industry remains resilient and prepared for future growth.
