Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports achieved a record turnover of $7.2 billion in 2024, reflecting significant growth in key international markets. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, noted that Vietnamese fruits and vegetables are now available in over 60 global markets, largely due to the diverse range of high-quality tropical fruits produced.
The export market has seen substantial expansion, particularly with China, which is a major consumer of fruits like durian, banana, and mango. Exports to China grew by 67% in 2023 and 27% in 2024. The enhanced trade promotion efforts and the implementation of 16 new-generation free trade agreements have played a crucial role in this growth.
Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen, General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, highlighted the focus on South Korea and Japan as potential markets, noting their large populations and high demand for agricultural products. He pointed to the expansion of grapefruit exports to South Korea as an example of effectively leveraging logistics advantages.
However, challenges remain within the fruit and vegetable supply chain. Mr. Nguyen Thanh Tung, Deputy General Director of Dong Giao Food Export Joint Stock Company (Doveco), identified issues including small-scale production, limited use of modern technology, and a lack of knowledge about fertilizer and pesticide usage. These factors affect the stability and quality of raw material supply, as well as food safety levels.
To address these challenges, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association is advocating for continuous improvement in product quality and safety. The association encourages the government to innovate policies that support sustainable industry development, emphasizing the need to expand official export markets and develop national standards for key export products to enhance the reputation and value of Vietnamese agricultural products.
