Vietnam’s coconut exports to China have seen significant growth, with major companies securing substantial contracts following the recent approval for fresh coconut exports to the Chinese market. According to the Vietnam Coconut Association (VCA), some companies have signed deals for 30 to 50 containers, with one firm agreeing to supply as many as 1,500 containers. The VCA expects total fresh coconut exports to China to reach $250 million this year, representing 25% of the industry’s export value.
Cao Ba Dang Khoa, Secretary General of the VCA, highlighted the potential of Vietnam’s coconut market in China, stating, “The opening of the Chinese market for fresh coconuts is a positive signal for the industry and for local economic development.” Nguyen Dinh Tung, CEO of Vina T&T Group, noted that agricultural fairs have generated significant interest from Chinese buyers, with his company preparing to export fresh coconuts to the expanding market.
Beyond fresh coconuts, processed coconut products such as coconut milk, coconut water, and dried coconut are also gaining popularity in China. Nguyen Van Thu, chairman of GC Food, stated that his company is conducting trial shipments to meet the rising demand and expects to capture 15% of its revenue from the Chinese market next year.
However, Vietnamese businesses face competition from other coconut-exporting nations, such as Thailand, where lower prices present a challenge. To stay competitive, the Vietnamese coconut industry is focused on improving production processes, packaging, and quality standards to meet export requirements.
Coconuts are one of six key crops prioritized by Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development for development by 2030. In 2023, Vietnam exported fresh coconuts to 15 countries, with China showing a 30% increase in demand compared to the previous year.
Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development recently signed a protocol with China’s General Administration of Customs, setting phytosanitary requirements for fresh coconut exports, further facilitating access to the large Chinese market.
