Vietnamese Pepper: Decline in Volume, Surge in Value

in Importing & Exporting

Vietnam’s pepper industry has experienced a notable shift in its export dynamics, with a 5.1% decrease in export volume alongside a significant 45.4% increase in export turnover for 2024, reaching nearly $1.4 billion, as reported by the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA).

In December 2024, Vietnam exported a total of 15,265 tonnes of pepper, which included 12,771 tonnes of black pepper and 2,494 tonnes of white pepper, generating a total turnover of $100.6 million. While the export volume saw a decline of 4.3% compared to November, turnover decreased by 5.5%. The average export prices for black and white pepper were recorded at $6,476 and $8,198 per tonne, respectively, reflecting a slight decrease from the previous month.

The United States remained the largest market for Vietnamese pepper, constituting 29.5% of December’s exports with 4,509 tonnes, despite an 11.4% decline from November. Olam Vietnam was the leading exporter for the month, contributing 2,551 tonnes, followed by Nedspice and Phúc Sinh.

Throughout the past year, Vietnam exported a total of 250,600 tonnes of pepper, comprising 220,269 tonnes of black pepper and 30,331 tonnes of white pepper. The total export turnover reached $1.3 billion, with black pepper accounting for $1.1 billion and white pepper for $200.6 million. Although export volume decreased compared to 2023, the rise in turnover was attributed to higher export prices, with black pepper averaging $5,154 per tonne (a 49.7% increase) and white pepper reaching $6,884 per tonne (up 38.9%).

These price increases reflect ongoing efforts within the country to improve the quality and brand image of its pepper, transitioning towards high-quality, premium-priced products.

In a record year, the United States imported 72,311 tonnes of pepper in 2024, marking a 33.2% increase from 2023 and accounting for 28.9% of Vietnam’s total exports. Other significant markets included the UAE, Germany, and the Netherlands, which also exhibited strong growth, while exports to India and China saw notable declines.

On the import front, Vietnam acquired 36,727 tonnes of pepper in 2024, valued at $176.2 million, indicating increases of 38.4% in volume and 99.5% in value compared to the previous year. Indonesia emerged as the leading supplier, providing 17,194 tonnes, reflecting a 431.2% surge from the previous year.

Olam Vietnam was highlighted as the top performer in both exports and imports for 2024, exporting 27,800 tonnes and importing 12,462 tonnes. Other prominent exporters included Phúc Sinh, Nedspice Vietnam, and Haprosimex JSC.
