Federal and state leaders in the United States have toured commercial technologies supporting domestic lithium production and battery recycling, highlighting efforts to strengthen the supply chain for critical battery materials.
The visit in Nevada showcased a commercial scale lithium ion battery recycling facility and a demonstration plant producing battery grade lithium hydroxide from claystone resources. The technologies are supported in part by the United States Department of Energy.
The lithium production demonstration uses material from the Tonopah Flats Lithium Project and is designed to support the development of a future commercial lithium hydroxide refinery in central Nevada. This approach connects domestic mineral resources with processing capabilities, creating a more integrated pathway for battery material production.
Battery recycling also plays an important role in the developing supply chain. Recovering materials from used lithium ion batteries can help return valuable resources to industrial production while supporting a more circular materials system.
The Nevada facilities demonstrate how domestic mining, mineral processing, battery recycling, and technology development can work together to build stronger critical minerals supply chains. Continued investment in these capabilities could support growing demand for lithium and other materials used across advanced manufacturing and energy technologies.
