Asia Strengthens Critical Mineral Supply Chains

by Jessica Jumaway

in Sustainable Logistics

Asian economies are expanding efforts to strengthen responsible practices across critical mineral supply chains, creating opportunities to improve supply chain visibility, worker protections, and access to international markets.

South Korea, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines are developing or advancing human rights due diligence frameworks that can support greater transparency across industries. For critical minerals, these measures can help businesses better understand sourcing networks and strengthen responsible procurement practices.

Critical minerals are increasingly important to Asia’s industrial development, supporting batteries, electric vehicles, electronics, renewable energy, and advanced manufacturing. South Korea remains highly dependent on imported critical minerals, while Indonesia has become a major center for nickel production and processing. These connections highlight the importance of stronger oversight and traceability throughout mineral supply networks.

Asian manufacturing hubs are also becoming increasingly important links between mineral producers, component suppliers, manufacturers, and global markets. As international trade requirements develop, companies with greater visibility into their sourcing and production networks can better prepare for changing market access requirements.

Governments across the region are introducing import controls, compliance measures, and due diligence initiatives. South Korea is considering mandatory human rights due diligence legislation, Thailand is consulting on responsible business conduct measures, and Indonesia has strengthened its business and human rights compliance framework. The Philippines is also considering legislation that includes human rights due diligence provisions.

These developments could support more consistent supply chain standards across Asia while encouraging investment in traceability, responsible sourcing, and supplier oversight. Stronger domestic frameworks may also provide businesses with greater clarity as global requirements continue to evolve.

Asia’s growing role in critical mineral production, processing, manufacturing, and trade gives the region an opportunity to strengthen responsible supply chains while supporting long term industrial development and international market participation.
