Toyota Material Handling North America (TMHNA) has announced plans to establish a battery development center in New York, in collaboration with The Raymond Corporation.
The center, located in Henrietta, New York, will focus on the development, prototyping, and testing of advanced energy storage solutions, including lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells. TMHNA aims to leverage local energy storage resources in the Rochester area to support its technological advancements in the field.
Empire State Development (ESD), New York’s primary economic development agency, is providing support for the project through the Excelsior Jobs Tax Credit program, with up to US$1.5 million in assistance. Additional support comes from the County of Monroe Industrial Development Agency and Greater Rochester Enterprise.
Brett Wood, president and CEO of TMHNA and senior executive officer at Toyota Industries Group, expressed enthusiasm for the project, emphasizing its potential to contribute to community growth and sustainable technology innovation.
The total project cost is estimated to be slightly over $2 million. Despite considering other locations, TMHNA selected the Finger Lakes region for its renowned talent pool and technological infrastructure.
TMHNA plans to create up to 40 new jobs at the facility, with preparations set to begin immediately. The testing center is expected to be operational by spring 2024. Currently, TMHNA employs 2,560 workers statewide.
