Taiwan Expands Battery Supply Capacity

by Jessica Jumaway
09/16/2026
in Electric Vehicle (EV) and Mobility Industry

Taiwan is expanding its role in the global battery materials supply chain with a new lithium iron phosphate precursor facility in Tainan. The plant is planned to begin trial production in January 2027 and start mass production shipments in July 2027.

The facility is expected to begin with annual production capacity of 25,000 to 50,000 tonnes, with potential expansion toward 100,000 tonnes as demand develops. Production will support a long term supply agreement with a North American customer serving markets such as energy storage, data center backup power, and electric vehicles.

The new production model will divide activities between Taiwan and the United States, with precursor manufacturing carried out in Taiwan and downstream processing conducted in the United States. This structure is designed to strengthen supply chain security while supporting regional production and trade requirements.

The project involves an investment of approximately NT$1 billion for facility leasing and equipment purchases. Using an existing facility is expected to accelerate the development timeline compared with constructing a new plant from the ground up.

Tainan is emerging as an important location for battery material production, with the new facility adding capacity to Taiwan’s advanced materials manufacturing base. The development also creates an additional source of lithium iron phosphate materials for international battery and energy markets.

As battery demand continues to grow across electric mobility, energy storage, and data infrastructure, diversified production networks can provide greater flexibility in sourcing and processing. Taiwan based precursor production combined with downstream operations in North America could strengthen connections between Asian manufacturing capabilities and overseas markets.

The planned expansion highlights the growing importance of regional battery material hubs as global industries develop more diversified and interconnected supply networks.
