Lufthansa has expanded its Express Rail program by incorporating Deutsche Bahn’s (DB) City-Ticket into its offerings. This enhancement permits passengers to utilize local public transportation—such as buses, trams, subways, and suburban trains—during their journeys to and from Express Rail stations. The integration aims to provide a more seamless and flexible travel experience for customers.
The City-Ticket feature is applicable to all Lufthansa Express Rail destinations, with the exceptions of Siegburg and Basel. Passengers can identify the availability of the City-Ticket by the “+City” suffix displayed after the city name on their tickets. This addition allows for one complimentary journey within the designated area of the Express Rail cities, valid until the end of service or until 3:00 AM the following day.
In recent years, demand for the Lufthansa Express Rail service has shown consistent growth. In 2024, approximately 500,000 passengers utilized the service for arrivals and departures at Frankfurt Airport. The integration of the City-Ticket is a collaborative effort between Lufthansa and DB to enhance intermodal travel options, offering passengers greater flexibility in their transportation choices.
Currently, Lufthansa Express Rail connects Frankfurt Airport to 28 cities, providing over 240 ICE connections that carry Lufthansa flight numbers. This extensive network reflects the airline’s commitment to integrating rail and air travel, aiming to streamline the passenger experience from train to plane.
The inclusion of the City-Ticket aligns with broader efforts to promote sustainable transportation by encouraging the use of public transit systems. By facilitating easier access to local transportation, Lufthansa and DB aim to reduce reliance on private vehicles, thereby contributing to environmental conservation initiatives.
Passengers are advised to check their eligibility for the City-Ticket when booking Lufthansa Express Rail services and to familiarize themselves with the specific terms and conditions associated with its use. This development represents a significant step toward more integrated and eco-friendly travel solutions, enhancing the overall convenience for Lufthansa’s customers.
