National Defense University (NDU) professor Ke Ming-te has been released on bail following an investigation into alleged fraud and unauthorized collaboration with Chinese entities. The Taoyuan District Prosecutors’ Office questioned Ke and conducted searches at his residence and NDU’s Chung Cheng Institute of Technology.

Ke is suspected of secretly collaborating with China through Dexnano Chemicals Technology Co, a company he allegedly established with his son, Ke Yi-fan. The investigation focuses on potential fraud related to research funding and the extent of Ke’s collaboration with Chinese counterparts.

In 2023, then-Democratic Progressive Party legislator Lin Ching-yi highlighted that NDU’s Systems Engineering Research Center, where Ke oversaw technology integration, conducts critical precision systems research for Taiwan. Lin alleged that Ke used his son as a front to establish Dexnano Chemicals and had been collaborating with China on technology while serving on the company’s board for over a decade.

Since 1997, Ke has been involved in 117 projects under the National Science and Technology Council and its predecessors, including sensitive research areas such as advanced systems engineering, firearm components, stealth paint, and naval electromagnetic weapons. Lin expressed concerns that Ke’s dealings with China could involve potential leaks of sensitive information and unauthorized transfer of research patents.

The Ministry of National Defense has been cooperating with the Taoyuan District Prosecutors’ Office and referred the case to law enforcement authorities. NDU has stated its commitment to fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation.

The investigation underscores Taiwan’s vigilance in safeguarding its sensitive technologies and research from unauthorized foreign collaborations. Authorities continue to scrutinize the case to determine the full extent of any potential security breaches.
