Europe Supports Open Source Supply Chain Research

in Cybersecurity in Trade

European funding is supporting new research and development projects focused on strengthening the software supply chain through better security, metadata and open source technologies.

A €400,000 grant program is now available for eligible open source projects, with individual proposals able to request between €5,000 and €50,000. Funding can support software development, research, security audits, technical validation, documentation, standardization and other activities that contribute to stronger digital infrastructure.

The initiative places particular emphasis on improving software package metadata, including information about components, dependencies, licensing and security. More consistent and accessible data can help organisations better understand the software used across their digital supply chains and support more effective compliance and risk management.

The program also supports projects that advance open source license compliance and make important datasets more accessible across the wider technology ecosystem. Applicants are expected to demonstrate technical feasibility, practical impact and a clear connection to the program’s objectives.

The initiative forms part of a broader European effort to develop open, secure and reusable digital infrastructure. Continued investment in software supply chain research can help improve transparency, interoperability and resilience across the digital economy.
