The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has officially refuted claims that China secretly shipped actual firearms to the Solomon Islands in 2022. RSIPF Commissioner Mostyn Mangau clarified that the shipment consisted of imitation firearms used solely for training purposes. He emphasized that these replicas were incapable of firing live ammunition and were only intended to simulate the weight and feel of real rifles and pistols for training scenarios.
This clarification from the RSIPF follows a report by Al Jazeera and subsequent concerns raised by US diplomats. The report suggested that the shipment might have contained real pistols and rifles, contrary to the government’s claims of them being mere replicas. According to a diplomatic cable from the US embassy in Papua New Guinea, the firearms appeared real and were numbered uniquely, raising suspicions about their nature and purpose.
The manner of the shipment’s unloading also drew scrutiny. US diplomats questioned why the cargo, reportedly comprising 95 replica rifles and 92 replica pistols, was offloaded clandestinely at 3 am, without the usual customs procedures or public disclosure.
These developments occur amidst growing geopolitical tensions in the Pacific region, particularly between China and Western nations like the US, Australia, and New Zealand. The Solomon Islands, with a population of over 700,000, has been a focal point in this rivalry. Recent years have seen the Solomon Islands under Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare enhance its ties with China, a move that has caused internal divisions within the nation and concern among Western officials. This includes a security cooperation agreement with Beijing in 2021, which has raised apprehensions about potential Chinese military expansion in the Pacific.
