San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) issued a cautionary notice to its customers regarding a recent surge in fraudulent activity targeting utility consumers. The company warned customers to remain vigilant against scammers attempting to deceive them into making payments through deceptive tactics.
According to SDG&E, scammers have been employing various methods, including phone calls, emails, and even in-person visits, to impersonate utility representatives. These individuals often use aggressive tactics to pressure customers into making immediate payments, threatening disconnection of services if payment is not rendered promptly. Additionally, some scammers have been known to manipulate caller ID systems, making it appear as though the calls are originating from legitimate utility numbers.
SDG&E emphasized that they do not conduct business in this manner. They reiterated that their representatives will never demand immediate payment over the phone, via email, or in person. Moreover, they assured customers that any communication regarding billing matters would include detailed information about the customer’s account and would not involve threats of immediate disconnection.
To protect themselves against such scams, SDG&E advised customers to verify the identity of anyone claiming to represent the utility company. Customers should request the individual’s name, employee ID, and a callback number to confirm their legitimacy. Furthermore, customers should never provide personal or financial information to unsolicited callers or visitors.
The utility company encouraged customers to report any suspicious activity immediately to both SDG&E and local law enforcement agencies. They also recommended that customers educate themselves and their family members about common scam tactics to prevent falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
In light of the increasing prevalence of utility scams, SDG&E emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of their customers. They pledged to continue working diligently to identify and mitigate fraudulent activity while keeping customers informed about emerging threats.
