Educational institutions, including students, teachers, parents, and staff, are grappling not only with physical safety threats but also with an increasing number of cybersecurity challenges. According to an Emsisoft report based on publicly available data, 1,981 schools across 45 U.S. districts fell victim to cybersecurity attacks in 2022, nearly doubling the incidents from the previous year.

Schools face a significant hurdle in dealing with cybersecurity threats due to limited funding. The Penn Manor School District, for example, has highlighted the strain on resources, with Chief Information Officer Charlie Reisinger emphasizing the global nature of cyber threats targeting educational institutions.

Cybercriminals targeting schools can gain access to a wealth of sensitive information, including identifying details, assessments, grades, health records, and more. The socio-emotional impact of such breaches, particularly on students, cannot be underestimated.

Device security within educational settings is another concern, with devices often being lost, misplaced, or having essential security features disabled. Phishing attacks, exploitation of vulnerabilities, and ransomware pose primary threats, leading to downtime, recovery efforts, and potential ransom payments.

Addressing these challenges requires a multi-faceted approach. Federal funding and regulations play a crucial role in enhancing school cybersecurity. Initiatives such as the Department of Homeland Security’s State and Local Cybersecurity Grant Program and regulations like California’s Age-Appropriate Design Code Act contribute to strengthening defenses.

Closing the cyber talent gap is essential, and schools can establish partnerships with local universities to create talent pipelines through internships, apprenticeships, and knowledge exchanges. Additionally, data encryption, responsible vendor disclosure, and leveraging government resources like the NIST National Vulnerability Database are emphasized as critical measures.

Understanding indicators of compromise, swift detection of breaches, and having an incident response team are vital components of an effective cybersecurity strategy for schools. Implementing multi-factor authentication, with a preference for secure methods like physical hardware security tokens, is recommended to enhance security, even considering the challenge of technology use among young students.

Despite the inevitable nature of cyber attacks, the collaborative efforts of the education community, coupled with governmental support and industry best practices, can contribute to mitigating cybersecurity risks in schools.
