In a significant move towards advancing India’s technological infrastructure, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to virtually inaugurate three semiconductor facilities, with a combined investment nearing ₹1.25 lakh crore. The inauguration, part of the event titled ‘India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat,’ underscores the government’s ambition to make India a prominent player in the global semiconductor industry, aiming at both design and manufacturing prowess. The projects include a semiconductor fabrication plant in the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR) in Gujarat, and two Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facilities, one in Morigaon, Assam, and another in Sanand, Gujarat.
This initiative is aligned with the Prime Minister’s vision to boost India’s standing in the semiconductor sector, which is critical for various technology-driven industries, and to generate employment opportunities for the youth.Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) is tasked with establishing the fabrication facility at DSIR, representing the country’s first commercial semiconductor fabrication unit, under the Modified Scheme for setting up Semiconductor Fabs in India. This facility alone accounts for an investment exceeding ₹91,000 crore.
Additionally, TEPL will also develop the OSAT facility in Assam’s Morigaon, committing about ₹27,000 crore under the Modified Scheme for Semiconductor Assembly, Testing, Marking, and Packaging (ATMP). CG Power and Industrial Solutions Limited will set up the second OSAT facility in Sanand, with an investment of approximately ₹7,500 crore under the same scheme. These projects are anticipated to significantly bolster the semiconductor ecosystem in India, creating thousands of jobs directly and stimulating employment in related sectors like electronics and telecom. The event is expected to draw substantial attention from the youth, including college students, and leaders within the semiconductor industry, marking a pivotal moment in India’s journey towards becoming a global hub for semiconductor technology and manufacturing.
