United States Advances Hydrogen Supply Chain Technology

by Jessica Jumaway
09/15/2026
in Energy

Researchers in the United States have developed an electrochemical process that can extract high purity hydrogen from ammonia while using significantly less energy than conventional methods.

The new approach could make ammonia a more efficient carrier for storing and transporting hydrogen. Traditional methods require temperatures above 500 degrees Celsius, while the new process uses electricity to separate hydrogen at high purity for fuel cells and industrial applications.

The development could improve an important stage of the hydrogen supply chain by making it more efficient to convert transported and stored ammonia back into usable hydrogen. This could support longer distance transportation and contribute to the growth of international hydrogen trade.

The research comes as countries continue to increase their focus on low emissions hydrogen and develop policies and investments to expand the sector. Hydrogen is being explored for applications in heavy industry, shipping, energy, and advanced manufacturing.

By reducing the energy required during hydrogen conversion, the new technology could help build a more efficient supply chain and support the development of future clean energy networks.
