The Ministry of Commerce of the Chinese mainland announced that it is evaluating the possibility of suspending tariff concessions on a range of products from Taiwan. This consideration includes items such as agricultural and fishery products, machinery, automotive parts, and textiles, under the framework of the Cross-Strait Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA).
This deliberation follows a previous action by the Tariff Commission of the State Council, which had already suspended preferential tariff rates under the ECFA for 12 imported products from Taiwan. These products, including propylene and ortho-xylene, have been affected by this suspension since January 1, as stated by a spokesperson from the ministry.
Following this announcement, there has been attention on the response of Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party authorities regarding trade restrictions with the mainland. The spokesperson from the Ministry of Commerce pointed out that Taiwan has yet to take effective measures to lift these trade restrictions. Furthermore, the spokesperson accused the Taiwanese authorities of political maneuvering and evading responsibility.
The spokesperson also mentioned that the concerned departments would continue to review and adjust trade policies towards the Taiwan region, following the provisions and regulations outlined in the ECFA.
