Nintendo has announced that it will postpone the launch of pre-orders for its upcoming Switch 2 console in the United States, initially scheduled for April 9. The delay comes in response to newly implemented tariffs on Japanese exports, following the announcement of global tariffs by US President Donald Trump.
The gaming company had planned to open pre-orders in the US just days after unveiling the highly anticipated console on Wednesday, coinciding with the introduction of the new tariffs. However, in a statement, Nintendo said it would hold off on opening pre-orders as it assesses the potential impact of the tariffs and the evolving market conditions.
Despite the delay in pre-order availability, Nintendo confirmed that the planned release date for the Switch 2 remains set for June 5. The postponement of pre-orders only applies to the US market, and pre-orders in other regions, including the UK, are not affected.
The tariffs, which now include a 24% tax on exports from Japan, have raised concerns about potential price increases for the console. While Nintendo has not indicated whether it will adjust the price of the Switch 2, the company will have to decide whether to absorb the additional costs or pass them onto consumers.
The new tariffs have sparked mixed reactions, with US President Trump asserting that they will boost the US economy and protect American jobs. However, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has described the tariffs as a “national crisis,” emphasizing the need for a coordinated response.
In the US, the Switch 2 is priced at $449.99, with its flagship game, Mario Kart World, retailing for $79.99. Consumers can purchase the game at a reduced price if bundled with the console. Whether the tariffs were factored into the initial pricing remains unclear, but the significant tariff increase could lead to potential price adjustments in the future.
